Zebra

Zebras are native to the continent of Africa and well-known for their distinctive stripes. There are three living species of zebra: the plains zebra (Equus quagga), the grevy's zebra (Equus grevyi) [the largest and most endangered], and the mountain zebra (Equus zebra). Each species has unique stripes as does each individual animal. All zebras are black with white stripes. A zebra's skin is black under the hair as well. Zebra can be surprisingly aggressive, biting and kicking to defend their young or when males are fighting over a female. They are fast and agile, capable of running at speeds of 36 mph.

Did you know...scientists have developed a way to read zebra stripes like bar codes to be able to identify specific zebras in a herd.
