Red Deer
Though red deer and elk look similar, they are two distinct species. Red deer are native to North America, Europe, Asia, and northwestern Africa. Red deer are smaller than the elk and sound much different producing a deep roar rather than the loud wailing bugle of an elk (a mating call). Red deer antlers have two main beams, tend to grow up and inward, and have more points (branches off the main beam) than the elk. They are nocturnal grazing at night, have an amazing agility to jump, and can run up to 40 mph. In winter, the deer’s reddish hair is replaced with a longer, thicker, brownish-gray coat.
Did you know…red deer and elk calves are born with spots to provide camouflage from potential predators. These markings fade by about three months of age.
