Koi Fish
Koi fish are descendants of the hardy carp. Farmers in Eastern Asia noticed the bright color patches on carp and bred them to get the beautiful fish we have today. They enjoy living in groups with other Koi fish, are omnivores (eating both plants and insects), and can actually get sunburn, so shade is important on sunny days. Koi fish were brought to the world’s attention in 1914 when one was given to the Japanese emperor as a gift to grace the imperial palace’s moat.
Did you know…the oldest koi fish on record was a koi named Hanako born in 1791, who didn't die until 1977 at the age of 226!
