Kangaroo (Red)

The Red kangaroo is the largest of all kangaroos, the largest terrestrial mammal native to Australia, and the largest marsupial living today. Marsupials are not fully developed at birth. Immediately after birth, tiny and blind, they crawl into the mother’s pouch to be nourished, protected, and grow.

An adult male kangaroo is called a boomer (also a jack buck), a female is a jill (also a flyer or roo), and a baby is a joey. Kangaroos are designed for jumping. They can leap as high as 10 feet and as long as 25 feet. They have short front legs, powerful back legs, huge back feet, and strong tails, which help them balance.

Did you know…kangaroo mothers can produce different kinds of milk simultaneously for a newborn and an older joey still in the pouch.
