Dutch Belted Galloway Cattle

The Dutch Belted Galloway cattle is a dairy breed (not to be confused with the smaller Belted Galloway cattle developed for meat production). Most Dutch Belted cattle are black with distinctive large, white belts around their trunks. Red and white coloring is also found. The breed is an efficient producer, able to convert relatively small amounts of grass into large amounts of milk. The breed was almost lost during the 1970s, but the numbers have increased due to a revived interest on the part of farmers for grass-based dairy cows.

Did you know…in its native Holland, the breed is also known as the Lakenvelder. The term ‘laken’ means a sheet or blanket around the body.
