Standard Donkey

Donkeys have long been companion and work animals for humans and are still a lifeline to families in parts of Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. The term “standard” refers to size. The size of a standard donkey is over nine but under 12 hands (36 – 48 inches). The name “donkey” is derived from dun, meaning grey-brown, and ky which means small. Domestic donkeys are typically used as pack animals or for milk and are trained to protect other livestock from predators. Male donkeys are called jacks and females are called jennets or jennies.
