Scottish Highland Cattle

The Highland is a Scottish breed of rustic cattle. The usual coat color is reddish brown, but they may also have yellow, pale/silver, dun/brindle, or black coloring. They have a double coat of hair. On the outside is the oily outer hair – the longest of any cattle breed, covering a downy undercoat making it suitable for the rainy, windy conditions of the Highlands. Both sexes have handlebar shaped horns, are known for their friendly nature, and have a lifespan up to 20 years – longer than most other breeds of cattle.

Did you know … Highland cows are sometimes called Highland coos. ‘Coo’ means ‘cow’ in the old Scots language.
