The emu is the second largest bird in the world next to the ostrich, averaging 5-6 feet tall and 120 pounds.
Females will lay 9-12 dark green eggs weighing 1 to 1.5 pounds each. While the female defends the nest for the 53 day incubation period, it’s the male who actually incubates the clutch without eating and rarely drinking. Once hatched, dad is the one who teaches the chicks what to eat, how to eat it, and where to find the food. The male also guards the chicks for up to 18 months. That sounds like a pretty special dad to me.
